Introduction:

Shirodhara is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy that is incredibly beneficial for your body and mind. This curative and preventive wonder is a holistic health approach that originated in India thousands of years ago. It focuses on balancing your doshas and finding harmony.

Shirodhara can relax the mind and help eliminate  stagnant waste (ama) from the body by balancing your doshas. The calming effect it produces is similar to that achieved by meditation.

Different Types of Shirodhara Massage :

Shirodhara therapy generally uses different types of herbal oils or infusions to bring about a soothing sensation to the mind and body. Depending upon the type of liquid used, it is categorized into the following types:

(A) Taila Dhara (Thaila Dhara):

Ayurvedic practitioners advise the use of herbal oils by mixing them with herbal extracts or different essential oils. This is beneficial for balancing the Vata dosha   in the body. herbal oil for shirodhara.

(B) Dugadha Dhara (Ksheerdhara):

Dugadha Dhara uses milk infused with herbs. The medicated milk is poured over the head and it is helpful in Vata and Pitta’s predominant headaches, stress, and anxiety, and helps nourish and relax the body.   

(C) Takra Dhara (Thakradhara):

Takra Dhara uses buttermilk infused with special herbs. It is beneficial for balancing the Pitta dosha and helps maintain homeostasis, which is the body’s ability to maintain internal stability despite changes in external conditions.

(D) Kwatha Dhara (Decoction):

Decoctions made with different herbs are used in Kwathdhara. It helps in balancing Vata and Kapha dosha and is considered therapeutic for various other conditions as well. Depending upon the diagnosed condition or dosha imbalance, the main ingredient in kwatha dhara consists of decoctions made by using various herbs.

(E)Jala Dhara (Aqueous formulation):

This type mostly uses coconut water as the main ingredient for the treatment. It is beneficial for balancing the Pitta dosha and helps maintain homeostasis, which is the body’s ability to maintain internal stability despite changes in external conditions.
