Introduction:-

In Ayurveda, the cause of eye problems is considered to be Pitta Dosha. If there is any problem in the eyes then we need to pay attention. If the eyes blink less than normal, this cooling and lubrication process is disrupted, increasing the likelihood of stress-related problems on the eyes. Netra Tarpan is a time-honored therapeutic procedure rooted in the ancient Indian medical system Ayurveda. Literally translated as “to nourish the eyes”

Ayurveda treatment improves the vision of eyes and cures eye problem naturally. it also aware about eye care.

This Panchkarma procedure nourishes  the eyes. This procedure is useful both in healthy  as well as diseased person. It protects the eyes from degeneration due to ageing process in healthy person.

‘Netra Tarpana’ is comprised of 2 root words – Netra + Tarpana
Netra means Eye and Tarpana – means Nourishment
Which means ‘Nourishment of Eye’ which nourishes the eye
Different names for Netra Tarpana –
Netra Tarpanam, Akshi Tarpana, Akshi Tarpanam

Netra Vasti – Vasti means pooling. Cured oil or ghee is filled in a flour compartment. vasti constructed around the eyes and left set up for fixed duration of time. This procedure nourishes and strengthens the eyes, cures the eye diseases..

How Netra Tarpan treats ?

Netra Tarpan or “hot oil bath” eyes improve blood flow in the eye capillary. Due to increased blood circulation the fatigue in eyes is relived.

result it improves quality of zoom-in and zoom-out or focusing strength of eye ciliarAs ay muscle.

Procedure of Netra Tarpan :-

1. Purva Karma Procedure :–

Purva Karma is before treatment Procedure in which patient is completely examined,patient disease is examined.

patient prakriti and vikriti is analyzed in detail with documentation.Medicine,line-up treatment,materials should be listed properly.

Materials needed for the Netra tarpan are collected beforehand.

Materials for procedure :–

  • Ghrita (medicated ghee) .
  • Flour of black gram for constructed around the eye.
  • Water
  • Stove
  • Bowls
  • Vessels
  • Spoons
  • Sterile cloth / cotton / tissue papers

Follow below step for procedure :–

  • Preparing the flour ring (mixed flour of barley and black gram).
  • Preparing mixture thoroughly in a sterile vessel by adding water and little quantity of oil.
  • The mixture is made into a bolus. 2 of the smallest rings are meant to fit around the eyes Ready. That is to say, will fit the inner circumference of the ring The extent of attachment of the eye to lock the eye inside it.
  • Fomentation –before the treatment a gentle fomentation is given to the eyes with cloth dipped in warm water before constructing the Tarpana ring the water shall be wiped off with a sterile cloth or cotton
  • The level of The ring should be of 2 fingers (1 finger = 1.75 cm roughly). small amount.
  • Flour has to be kept in a small utensil. it will be important to seal the intersection.
  • Ring with eye attachment to prevent leakage of medicines.
  • The ghee/Ghrita used for netra tarpanam will be Liquefied and kept lukewarm. For this required amount of ghee is added in a small Sterile bowl. The smaller bowl is placed in a larger pot containing hot water. after gruel If it melts, its temperature should be checked. medicine should be given
    lukewarm.

2.Pradhana Karma Procedure :–

Pradhana karma means process of conducting netra tarpan

  • There should be a windless place for Akshi Tarpan treatment.
  • Appropriate season and time: In a season that is neither too hot nor too cold and when there is no rain or cloudy sky.
  • The time of treatment should be morning or evening.
  • Patient position: the patient is placed on the back ,patient will be given neck support.

Construction of Netra Tarpana ring around the eye: The rings of flour which were kept ready in the Purva karma are inserted over the eyes sockets, such that the eyes are enclosed within their respective rings. The junctions of the rings with eye sockets are sealed with wet flour so that the medicament doesn’t leak or escape during the process of the treatment.

Filling the Tarpana Ring with medicine – The medicated ghee (ghrita) which was melted and kept warm in the Purvakarma is gently poured in the Netra Tarpan cabinets such
that the eyes are dipped within the medicine. The patient is advised to close the eyes while dropping the medicine in the ring. Later patient is instructed to open and close
the eyes repeatedly so that the interior of eyes come into the contact of the medicines intermittently.

The medicaments are left in place for a fixed duration of time. The patient might experience burning sensation during the process of the treatment but patient
should be intimated that it is quiet natural to happen. The irritation will come down once the medicines are removed

3.Duration of Netra Tarpan Procedure :–

 

Netra tarpan time duration will vary for different disease and patient condition .

Vartma roga’s

Vata Roga

The diseases caused due to morbid Vata Tarpana shall be done on a daily basis
300 matra kala(approx 90-95 seconds)

Sandhi Roga’s 

The diseases afflicting the junction areas of the eye like the junction between eyelashes and eyelids.
500 matra kala(approx 3 ½ minutes)

Sita Roga’s 

The diseases afflicting sclera or white of the eye.
600 Matra Kala(approx 4 minutes)

Pitta Roga

The disease caused due to morbid Pitta Tarpana shall be done on alternate days

Kapha Roga

the disease caused due to morbid Kapha Tarpana shall be done on every

4th day((after a space of 2 days between 2  sittings)

Swastha :

Healthy people Tarpana shall be done on every 4th day.
700 matra kala (approx 4 minutes)

Aasita Roga’s 

The diseases afflicting cornea, choroid, iris and middle layers of the eye
800 matra kala (approx 4 ½ minutes)

Drishtigata Roga

The diseases afflicting the retina and vision
1000 matra kala (approx 5 minutes & 4 seconds)

4.Samyak Trupta Lakshana :–

Samyak- Having clear knowlede,Lakshana -Signs Samayak Trupta Lakshana Means signs and symptoms of properly done trapana

In Samyak Trupta Lakshana Procedure can observe following symptoms and sign to declare perfection of therapy

  • Nirvritti: establishment of health in the eye.
  • Vishada lochanam: clarity of vision, eye vision should be clear.
  • Sukhya svapna: sound sleep,good sleep without any disturbance.
  • Varna patavam: proper perception of all the colors Proper perception of all colors by the eye and proper establishment of normal colors in the layers of the eye such as the white of the eye (the sclera) regaining its white color.
  • Pralsha kshamat: The eye can able to tolerate the light means tolerance of light.
  • Prakasha Akshamata : Intolerance to light.
  • Sukha Avabodhatvam: good awakening.
  • Vyadhi Vidhwamsa destruction of eye diseases
  • Conducted Netra Tarpana are opposite of those of properly done
  • Avishada Lochana Lack of clarity of eye and vision, feeling as if the vision has been clouded
  • Guru Lochana Heaviness of the eye
  • Varna Patava Akshamata Inability to perceive colors
  • Anivritti Sick eyes
  • Kriya Laghava Activities of the eye like closure and opening of lids easily
  • Atrupta Lakshana Signs of improperly

5. Ati Trupta Lakshana :–

Ati- Having improper,Lakshana -Signs Samayak Trupta Lakshana Means signs and symptoms of improperly or deficiency done trapana

  • Guru netrata : heaviness of eye
  • Avimalam : dirtiness of eye
  • Dosha samutklishtam aggravation of vata etc doshas
  • Kandu : </strong > itching of eyes
  • Upadeha : coating in the eyes
  • Rukshama : increase in the dryness of the eyes
  • Ashru : excessive lacrimation (tearing of eyes)
  • Asraadyam : excessive tearing of the eyes
  • Praksha Akshamata : intolerance to light
  • Atisnigdham : excessive unctuousness or oiliness of eye
  • Varna patava akshamata : inability to perceive the objects of vision or colors
  • Svapna nashnam : loss or lack of sleep
  • Anivritti : Sick eyes

Treat :When Netra Tarpan is done out of proportions, for longer duration or more number of days,
Kapha Vyadhi’s or disturbing symptoms of Kapha vitiation are manifested.

Vasa (shudda mamsa sneha – muscle fat)should be used for Netra Tarpan in conditions of Naktandhya (night blindness), Vata Timira (blindness or partial blindness caused due to Vata aggravation or cataract) and Krichra-bodhaka (difficulty to open
eyes)

6. Paschat Karma:-

Paschat Karma is post treatment procedure of netra tarpan

  • Removing the medicine :- The medicine is removed by creating a small hole in the lower portion of the wall of the flour ring at the outer angle of the eye and draining the
    contents in a bowl.
  • Wiping the eyes and the surrounding area :- The medicines sticking to the eye and the sockets are swabbed out by wiping them off with the help of a sterile cotton pad or a tissue paper. Afterwards the eyes can be gently wiped with a sterile cloth dipped in warm water Water or the same cloth is used to give a gentle compress to the eyes.

Dhumapana:

Herbal smoking should be given to the patient for the elimination of the Kapha which has been exaggerated due to the administration of ghrita in Netra tarpan, .

Putapaka :-

it is comprised of 2 words – Puta, significance hid warming, Paka implies getting ready or handling.

it should be possible in all those conditions in which Tarpana is finished. Those in whom Nasya (nasal instillation of prescriptions), Tarpana and Snehapana (treatment in which
medicated ghee is given for consumption in metered dosages either regular or as a section of pre-treatment methodology for Shodhana vis-à-vis cleansing procedures) are
contraindicated are not qualified to take Putapaka.

Putapaka can be done for those eligible to take the treatment after the aggravation of Dosha’s has been subsided.

Types of Putapaka:-

Three Types of Putapaka

  • 1. Snehana Putapaka
  • 2. Lekhaneeya Putapaka
  • 3. Ropaneeya Putapaka-

1. Snehana Putapaka :- putapaka having or admixed with fats or prepared with unctuous or fat-rich drugs –

It is preferred to be done in a person having rukshata (excessive dryness in the body) or ruksha netra (dryness in the eye) It is preferred to be done in Vata disorders of the eye

These are used for Snehana Putapaka:

  • Sneha – ghee or oil
  • Mamsa – meat
  • Vasa – meat soup
  • House – bone marrow
  • Meda – fat
  • Madhura aushadha – Medicines or drugs having sweet taste Duration – It is done for 200 matra kala

2.Lekhaneeya Putapaka :- putapaka prepared using drugs having a scraping nature i.e.
capacity to scrap off the kapha and fat

-It is preferred to be done in a person having snigdhata (oily body or excessive unctuousness of the body) or snigdha netra (unctuous eyes)

It is preferred to be done in Kapha-Vata conditions or Kapha-Vata disorders of the eye

Following medication are mixed together and used for Lekhaneeya Putapaka:

  • Jangala yakrit mamsa – flesh or meat of the liver of animals and birds living in dry and desert regions
  • Shunti – Ginger
  • Maricha – Pepper
  • Pippali – Long pepper
  • Krishna or Kanta loha Bhasma – Ash or calx of magnetic iron
  • Tamra bhasma – Calx or ash of copper
  • Shankha Bhasma – Ash or calx of conch
  • Pravala bhasma – Calx or ash of Coral
  • Saindhava lavana – Rock salt
  • Dadhi – curds etc.

It is done for time duration of 100 matra kala(Approx 30-32 second)

3.Ropaneeya Putapaka :- It is liked for getting strength and shine the eye or in eyes beset by bleak Pitta, Rakta or Vata or eyes distressed with Vrana (ulcers).

Acharya Vagbhata names it as Prasadana Putapaka (Putapaka arranged with sustaining drugs) and shows its utilization in Drishti Roga’s (Vision related disorders)

Procedure of Putapaka:-

In this strategy, the medicaments are enclosed by a mud ball which is handled in the wake of having been kept in the midst of consuming charcoal (acquired subsequent to consuming woods of restorative trees).

Instruction:-

  • Eye shall not be washed off immediately
  • Proper rest to eye should be advised
  • The patient is instructed not to open the eye immediately.
  • Head-bath shall be avoided as far as possible during the treatment
  • Patient is advised to open and close the eye a few times after a couple of minutes.vnot to rub their eyes in case irritation persists and told that it will naturally come down after a few minutes.
  • Patients can use spectacles when they are discharged to protect their eyes from sunlight, dust and breeze Eye should not be suddenly exposed to extremes of sunlight, breeze or dust and pollutants
  • Seeing towards the sky, irritants like welding etc should be avoided
  • Dosha balancing diet should be instructed. Vata-Pitta and Rakta aggravating diet and lifestyle practices should be avoided.
  • The patient should be advised to undergo Netra Tarpana at least twice in a year ,For preventive and relaxation purposes it can be taken for 1 or 2 sittings in a period of 1 month or 1 year.
